Michael Jackson famously had the same condition and explained his pale complexion was a result of portions of the skin losing their pigment. It occurs when skin pigment cells (melanin) die .

Winnie Harlow stopped by “The Real” talk show to surprise a 10-year-old fan named April who has the same skin condition. Winnie skipped out on New York Fashion Week to give April a hug in person and let her know that she admired her self-confidence.

“Every time I see her…I see the little girl that I wish I could have been at her age.” – Winnie Harlow

In her interview with ThoseGirlsAreWild, she says, “If God wanted me to be black, I’d be black. If God wanted me to be white, I’d be white. But he chose for me to be both and original. So I guess that’s the way I’m supposed to be.”

Cruelly nicknamed “zebra” and “cow” by peers in her school, Winnie is now taking the modelling world by storm. She has walked numerous runways across the world and currently models for the Italian clothing company; Diesel. Winnie has modelled for the likes of Vogue Italiala, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Ebony magazine, making her the worlds first model with Vitiligo.

“Self-image or self-confidence, it has to do with yourself,” she says. “Those things are scarred so much by other people, but those are really things within yourself. Those are things you should focus on yourself instead of looking towards the opinions and validation from other people that yes, you are beautiful. You should know that you are beautiful, you should know that you are creative, you should know that you are beautifully and wonderfully made. That’s just something you have to believe within yourself.” – Winnie Harlow

The fabulous Winnie Harlow continues to prove that your differences are what make you beautiful and unique. Her vitiligo hasn’t stopped her so why should any of your differences stop you?
